Lessons in Chemistry: Supper at Six
On 26 July 2026, Book-A-Table hosted Bonnie Garmus's Lessons in Chemistry at a mid-century Americana table in Bengaluru, with a cherry-red tablecloth and red, white and blue streamers. On the menu was hearty comfort food: cheese-and-tomato sliders and a bubbling baked pasta casserole.

The bookWhy Lessons in Chemistry
Bonnie Garmus's Lessons in Chemistry (2022) follows Elizabeth Zott, a chemist in early-1960s California who is pushed out of her lab and ends up hosting a television cooking show, Supper at Six. There she teaches cooking as the chemistry it is, and tells her viewers to take themselves seriously.
Elizabeth would have approved of the brief: proper food, cooked properly, for people with things to say. The table went cherry red, the streamers went patriotic, and the sliders were pinned with toothpicks and stacked high.
At the tableHow the afternoon went
- Platters of cheese-and-tomato sliders on a blue-rimmed dish.
- A baked pasta casserole, golden on top and scattered with herbs.
- Red, white and blue streamers, star cut-outs and black-and-white photo prints on the wall.
